Terms of Service

Surface Scholars (surfacescholars.com) is run by Gateway Futures Inc., 399 Fremont Street, San Francisco, CA 94105. It connects organizations with academic researchers for paid work, and it hosts the conversations that lead to that work: onboarding interviews, and calls between researchers and the people who want to work with them.

Every interview and call held on Surface is recorded (audio) and transcribed. By joining a meeting on Surface, whether through an account or through a meeting link, you agree to that. The recording and the transcript are kept by Surface and are available to the person who hosted the meeting, so the conversation can be reviewed, summarized, and acted on. They are not published and are not shared with other participants.

If you do not want a conversation recorded, do not join it on Surface; the host can hold it elsewhere.

Your profile is yours to edit and remove. Documents you upload to your profile are stored privately. Where you have agreed to it, we analyze what you upload with automated tools so that organizations can find you for relevant work; you can withdraw that agreement from your profile, and the analysis stops being used.

Paid work is agreed per task. Payment is made through the payout method you set up on Surface; identity verification and tax forms may be required before a payout can be sent, as the payment providers and the law require.

We keep what is needed to run the service: your profile, your uploads, the recordings and transcripts of meetings you were in, and the records of work and payment. You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you or for it to be deleted by writing to rishi@withgateway.ai. Records we are required to keep for payment and tax purposes are kept for as long as that requires.

When these terms change, the date above changes with them, and members are asked to agree to the new wording the next time it matters.
